Conversations with the community earlier this year about what they want their future libraries to be – and what it means to them now – have fed into the draft strategy.
The key objectives are: enabling access, space for all, knowledge advocacy, community collaborators and sustainable futures. Also driving future goals and outcomes will be a focus on the three customer groups mentioned in the Draft Strategy – most frequent users, regular and occasional, and past and potential.
The draft strategy assesses how a modern library should look, how it could be used, what it might house in terms of books, and resources and technology.
Once feedback has closed the Strategy will be completed and it will be adopted by Council.
Following this a process for site selection, including assessment criteria, with reference to the Civic Building business case, Statement of Proposal, and Napier City Council Long Term Plan (LTP) 2018-28 will begin. Further engagement will be undertaken with key stakeholders prior to full consultation.
The central Napier Library was re-located to MTG Hawke’s Bay after the Library Building was assessed for seismic strength and found to meet 15% of New Building Standards – very low and a potential risk to visitors and staff in a large earthquake. The LTP has $15.8 million set aside for this project.
The library is expected to remain at MTG for at least another two years.
