Benson Brothers: IT Innovators & Heritage Preservers

MAGIQ Software was founded in Napier on the 15th of February in 1980 by the three Benson Brothers – Jim, Pat and John Benson.

Since that time, the pioneering company has evolved into a dynamic, international business that has helped over 550 global public sector and social service businesses meet their finance and administration needs through the supply of quality software and services. And the company now employs more than 90 staff globally with offices in New Zealand, Australia and the USA.

One of the founding brothers, Jim Benson takes great pride in the longevity of deep customer and staff relationships: “Many of our staff and customers have been with us for well over 20 years. And our solution has proven to be scalable, allowing us to enter new vertical and regional markets to become an early adopter organisation and a leader in public sector Cloud technologies.

“MAGIQ Software dominates the New Zealand Local Government market and delivers best practice outcomes to public sector customers globally. Recently the Township of Newtown in Pennsylvania, USA was awarded the Government Finance Officers Association Distinguished Budget Presentation Award through the use of our software!

Our New Zealand headquarters is located in Napier which provides our staff with an exceptional lifestyle and our business taps into a significant pool of local highly skilled and talented staff,” said Jim.

Not only are the brothers IT pioneers but they are heritage preservers as well.

The City of Napier was destroyed by earthquake and fire in 1931 and rebuilt in the Art Deco style of the time. Brother Pat Benson is a proud member of Napier’s Art Deco Trust and has been actively working to preserve, restore and enhance Art Deco landmarks in Napier city.

Pat’s work is greatly appreciated and has contributed to Napier’s reputation as a world leader in Art Deco era heritage. Thanks to the restoration work an estimated 25,000 people now take the Art Deco Walk through the city bringing international tourism and recognition to Napier city.

The Benson brothers are not only pioneers in the New Zealand software industry but also bring tourism and employment to the Hawkes Bay District. And to this end, the staff at MAGIQ Software are extremely proud!
