Hastings – Heart of Hawke’s Bay

Our diverse district is world renowned for its geographic heroes, Cape Kidnappers and Te Mata Peak, and its unrivalled growing conditions that make it the engine room of the regional economy.

Hastings city is the administrative hub of our 5229 square kilometre district, serving the main urban areas of Hastings central, Flaxmere and Havelock North, as well as a myriad of smaller coastal and rural settlements.

The district is one of the largest apple, pear and stone fruit-producing areas in New Zealand. It has also developed into one of New Zealand’s most important grape growing and wine producing areas. Those industry success have spawned one of our largest draw cards: the wine and food trails established around the productive hinterland. There are now more than 75 wineries in Hastings, including New Zealand’s first ever winery restaurant, Vidal Estate.

The production of boutique, artisan foods is also growing, with cheese, fine meats, and locally developed delicacies on display at the Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Market (New Zealand’s oldest and largest weekly farmers’ market).

The same climatic conditions that make Hastings such a fantastic growing region mean outdoor leisure activities dominate, with walking, swimming, leisure cycling, mountain biking, tramping, and golf all very popular.

In summer, the Spring Racing Carnival and the internationally acclaimed NZ Horse of the Year are just two of many large-scale events that attract tourists. Visitors also head to New Zealand’s largest water park, ‘Splash Planet’, the gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers, and Te Mata Peak.
