Our growing economy

Our regions’ strong, productive base provides a solid foundation for new businesses to relocate and grow. Processing, manufacturing, packaging, engineering, logistics, transport, and other primary produce-associated businesses are growing to match demand.

And while Hawke’s Bay has depended significantly on its primary sector, investment in infrastructure – particularly the installation of world-leading fibre optic communication technology – has opened the doors for national and overseas companies to consider relocating all, or aspects of their operations here. While agriculture, horticulture, viticulture, forestry cropping, manufacturing and industry support services are the backbone of the regional economy, tourism also plays a vital role.

Hawke’s Bay is also home to New Zealand’s first space launch complex, Rocket Lab’s orbital launch site (known as Launch Complex 1) on the Mahia Peninsula in the Wairoa district.
