Havelock hospo scene welcomes Brother to the family

There’s a new café set to open in Havelock North. Brother, on Te Mata Road, opens Wednesday 9 November serving coffee, brunch, cabinet food, small plates and wine on tap.

Owned by local family Halle and Bryn Evans, Brother is a family friendly café that will be open five days a week from morning until late afternoon catering for locals and visitors to the Bay.

The set up is led by newcomer to the hospitality scene, Halle Evans. “We love social food that sparks conversation and encourages people to try new things. We treat everyone who walks through our doors as family and we hope to bring people in the community together. Think of Brother like your home away from home, with quality coffee and wine on tap.”

The café is on the grounds of Village Vineyards, which has been owned by the Evans family since 2019. Halle had her eyes on the restaurant building and has spent the last year renovating and modernising the space to create the new café.

Bryn was born and raised in Hawke’s Bay and has recently wrapped up a 15-year rugby career. He and Halle returned to the Bay with their young family and their sights on creating a quality, friendly hospitality venture. Halle will be running the café, with their three-year and three-month-olds close by.

Halle is juggling more than getting Brother off the ground. Along with the couple’s three-year-old daughter, they welcomed a son to the family in July this year. “Like many Hawke’s Bay locals, I’m a working mum and was keen to create a space that catered for all. We wanted a destination that was moderately priced, accessible and family friendly, and served a banging brunch!”

The menu is under the direction of Head Chef Matt Cooper who has recently stormed onto the Hawkes Bay food scene with his gourmet on-the-go business Social Eats, previously owning and running award-winning restaurants in Hamilton and Cambridge. The globally-inspired menu has been designed to reflect Halle and Bryn’s travels throughout America, Europe and the Basque Coast. Think piadinas in the cabinet and pintxos on the small plates menu to accompany a glass of wine.

Specialty coffee from Hawke’s Bay local Third Eye, brunch and cabinet food will be served throughout the day with small plates, grazing boards and wine in the afternoon. The Village Vineyards wine will be available on tap, along with a carefully curated selection of natural, organic and biodynamic Hawke’s Bay wines and a few local beers.

“Our focus is to support local and reflect the sustainable, organic ethos of Village Vineyards. We live, eat and breathe local, and champion the incredible suppliers from the Hawke’s Bay region.”

Brother welcomes the whole family, catering for young, old, kids and dogs – Halle’s fluffies and puppaccinos will be popular items on the menu.

Brother is at 265 Te Mata Road and opens Wednesday 9 November at 7:30am. For more information contact Halle Evans on 021 369 943 or [email protected]
