Hawke’s Bay Airport is celebrating 60 years

Hawke’s Bay Airport turns 60 in 2024, and we’re going all out to celebrate. Join us for a year full of exciting events, including a brand-new kids’ play area, the ever popular ‘Run the Runway’ event, and a photo competition with some fantastic local prizes. It’s going to be a year to remember!

The airport, located on land elevated from Te Whanganui a Orotū after the 1931 earthquake, was developed by Napier Aero Club members who cleared and levelled it for aviation. Initially, East Coast air connections started in 1935 from Napier to Gisborne, moving to this site (Beacons Aerodrome) later. Commercial airlines have operated here since the 1930s. A 1310m sealed runway was built, with the first Fokker Friendship landing in December 1963. Officially opened on 15 February 1964, the airport has since introduced two terminals, the latest offering a contemporary space with potential for expansion.
