Wattie’s opens refurbished pet food factory amid global shortage

Wattie’s has completed a multi-million-dollar upgrade of its Hastings pet food manufacturing site, as the world continues to face global pet food shortages.

The pet food manufacturing facility in Tomoana, Hastings, produces cat food brands Chef, Gourmet and Champ as well as a range of pet food products for export.

The focus of the upgrade was an investment in a new canning retort capability designed to increase reliability and productivity.

Over the last 12 months, pet owners have faced a global pet food shortage due to production and shipping issues as well as increased demand.

A spokeswoman for Countdown said the supermarket chain was still experiencing ups and downs with supply of some brands, but more volume was starting to flow through.

“There’s still a lot available, just not always what you are looking for unfortunately. We’re hoping it should be starting to come right over the next few weeks or so,” she said.
