WELCOME TO OUR HAWKE’S BAY

Our Great People

Hawke’s Bay’s population is about 181,500. Statistics reveal we’re a happy, healthy and satisfied lot. More than 35% of our workforce have degrees; 62% of us are of working age. Our community is friendly and culturally diverse and Hawke’s Bay is at the heart of Ngāti Kahungunu, which represents New Zealand’s third largest iwi population.

We grow great people – such as industrialist/entrepreneur Sir James Wattie, space scientist Sir Ian Axford and painter Rita Angus. This is home for creator of the legendary Toyota ‘Bugger’ advertising campaign, Kim Thorp, and businessman, Sir Graeme Avery, who came to Hawke’s Bay to establish Sileni Estates Winery.

Innovation is a core discipline and hallmark of our business community who design, manufacture and export world-class products including agricultural and horticultural machinery, educational furniture, cricket bats, rowing skiffs, motor launches, produce packaging, consumer durables and, of course, our food and wine.
